Iwi get chance to say what counts
Statistics New Zealand wants to know what information iwi want collected in next year's Census.
It is holding hui and inviting public submissions on a new standard that sets out how iwi information should be collected, organised and described.
It is also asking whether any iwi should be added to the classification list.
Statistics kaihautu Rhonda Paku says the existing standard was set in 1994, when the government was seeking information to help guide its work on treaty settlements.
"Today however we've got groups that are in post-settlement phase, we have re-emerging iwi groups that want their information that don't currently sit on the classification, and we know that iwi want far more granular information and detail about their own populations," she says.
Feedback needs to be in by May 4.
