Parihaka reconciliation on track despite price
A proposed $9 million payment for Parihaka has left whanau feeling short changed but determined to push ahead with reconciliation with the crown.
Puna Wano Bryant from the Parihaka Papakainga Trust says the sum was determined by officials who worked with the trust to assess the infrastructure needs of the historic village including water supply, waste water management, electricity and renewable energy, cultural development and intellectual property.
The reconciliation process was split off from the settlement of Taranaki Tuuturu claims, and is being handled by Christopher Finlayson in his role as Attorney General rather than Treaty Negotiations Minister.
But Ms Wano-Bryant says it's hard for people to see the difference.
A ceremony to mark acceptance of the reconciliation package will be held on May 27.
