Microfinance pioneer shares with iwi
Iwi leaders will this weekend hear from a Bangladeshi economist and Nobel laureate on ways to advance social enterprise.
Professor Muhammad Yunus won the Nobel Prize for founding the Grameen Bank and pioneering the concepts of microcredit and microfinance, where small loans are given to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans.
He will be welcomed on to Waipapa Marae at Auckland University tomorrow and take part in an event co-hosted by Chapman Tripp, Ngati Whatua Orakei and the Aera Foundation.
Also speaking is the Aera Foundation’s Derek Handley, an investor and advisor in the social enterprise Eat My Lunch, which uses a ‘buy one, give one’ model approach to children’s lunches.
Chapman Tripp managing partner Nick Wells says social enterprises are similar to iwi organisations in taking a holistic view of business and measuring success not just by financial returns but by social and environmental benefit.
