National has picked lawyer Harete Hipango as its candidate for Whanganui for the September 23 election.
The mother of three who has Te Atihaunui a Paparangi, Ngati Apa and Nga Rauru whakapapa has worked for both the public and private sector in areas of the law including family, mental health, youth justice, child welfare, criminal, Maori land and mediation.
Sitting National MP Chester Borrow is stepping down.
The seat, which goes from Whanganui to southern Taranaki including Hawera and Stratford, has been held by National since 2005, and at the last election it had a party vote majority of almost 8000 votes.
