Rangatahi getting governance guidance
Te Whare Hukahuka’s programme to train young Maori for governance roles is getting deeper.
Social entrepreneurs Shay Wright and Travis O’Keefe have secured $150,000 from the Mnistry for Youth Affairs to put 55, 17 to 24 year olds through their Ka Eke Poutama programme, which shows them what boards do and what best practice looks like in a Maori context.
Mr Wright says in all 130 rangatahi will go through Te Whare Hukahuka this year, including some who were on last year’s pilot coming back for stage two.
"Of the 45 that came through that programme last year they now sit on almost 40 different governance boards. As you can expect they have had a taster, they're awakened to it but now they 're needing some real practical support as they're making real life decisions and real life governance roles, so that's what the 201 programme is about this year," he says.
Shay Wright says the organisations and companies who let the students observe their boards have been impressed with the quality of questions and the humble approach of the rangatahi.
