After years of negotiating and planning, three Taranaki iwi this week received their settlement cash.
Te Kotahitanga o Te Atiawa chief executive Hemi Sundgren says for his iwi that means an $87 million infusion, as well as two cultural redress properties.
Taranaki Tuturu has a balance of $70 million, and Ngaruahine got $67.5 million.
Mr Sundgren says the iwi have taken advice from iwi who have already gone through the settlement journey, and they have created new structures and investment policies to manage their tribal endowment.
"We’ve had a commercial board in place the the past four to five months and they have developed a really strong investment polcy based on what our advantages are here as Te Atiawa. The opportunity we have now is that we can hopefully start to provide an enhanced position for our whanau and hapu and in a broader sense our iwi that are living outside the rohe," he says.
