New vision for south Auckland schools
An initiative to ensure south Auckland schoolchildren can see the blackboard is starting to have results.
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall has been working with the Essilor Vision Foundation trying to identify the estimated 30 percent of children with undiagnosed eye conditions.
Working with local optometrists, the foundation tests the children in primary schools and then supplies glasses.
Ms Wall says if children can’t see and understand what is going on around them they will disengage from learning.
"So if we can find those kids, if we can give them the glasses they need and explicitly link those glasses to being able to read, which we have done. And that is really to provide a focus not only for the children but also the families about how important it is that we remove all the barriers there is to reading," says Manurewa MP Louisa Wall.
