Taranaki mounga mourns Whero Bailey


A day after their treaty settlements passed into law, Taranaki has lost one of its pou kuia.
Parihaka kuia Whero o te Rangi Bailey died at the age of 80, just three weeks after the death of her husband Mutu .
Kui Whero, also known as Poppy, was a pou for many Taranaki wahine whom she shared her knowledge of karanga, poi, waiata tawhito and te reo Maori.
She was also known as the 'potiki' or youngest of a group that would travel to and from Taranaki and Poneke to strengthen the ties between Taranaki Whanui.
Whero Baily will be taken this afternoon from Owae Marae to Te Niho O Te Atiawa in Parihaka, where she will lie until the funeral service on Sunday morning before being laid to rest at Te Morehu, Parihaka.
