Hapu model experiment on Ngapuhi
The chair of the mandated Ngapuhi claim settlement body Tuhoronuku says it wants a level playing field before it commits to three way talks on how the settlement process should proceed.
Talks with Te Kotahitanga o Nga Hapu o Ngapuhi on the transition to the new Maranga Mai structure were due to start today.
But Hone Sadler says Tuhoronuku can’t attend because crown facilitator Nigel Fyfe demanded it accept without debate his interpretation of Maranga Mai.
He says Tuhoronuku wanted to start on the same basis as Te Kotahitanga, that acceptance was in principle and there was room for change.
"The devil is in the detail and there's no details there. This is something that is untried, that has been put together by people who haven't got any business acumen and it hasn't been tested and they want to test this on Ngapuhi as its settlement," Mr Sadler says.
Tuhoronuku wants to keep arguing for urban representation on the body that will oversee negotiations, but the crown has sided with Te Kotahitanga in saying it will leave it up to hapu to keep Ngapuhi living outside the rohe informed of the process.
