Te Runanga a Iwi o Ngapuhi has got through the year with a $1.85 million net surplus and increased net assets to $53 million.

The bulk of the assets are $21 million in fisheries settlement quota and $12 million in Aotearoa Fisheries income shares, with another $12 million held in cash and term deposits.

Apart from fisheries income, the next largest source of revenue is government contracts through Ngapuhi Social Servicves and other subsidiaries,

The runanga's annual wage bill is $4.5 million.

It paid out $7500 to each of its nine takiwa, another $85,000 went on scholarships, and more than $100,000 distributed via hapu development, discretionary and sponsorship funding.

Acting chair Carol Dodd says the results achieved within a pre-treaty settlement environment should give Ngapuhi confidence the runanga can responsibly manage and grow the tribe's revenue and asset base.

She says the real benefit is its increased ability to support the wellbeing and development of its people, including hapu and marae development initiatives, cultural events, tertiary scholarships and sponsorships.

Chair Sonny Tau will resume his position this month, once he has finished his community sentence on charges relating to killing kereru.
