Tuhoronuku ready to work with hapu
Tuhoronuku says it’s ready to accept the recommendations of the Maranga Mai report.
Chair Hone Sadler says it’s keen to start working with its Te Kotahitanga critics as soon as possible on setting up the new body, Te Hononga, to oversee Ngapuhi claim negotiations.
It now puts the pressure on Treaty Negotiations Minister Christopher Finlayson to get talks get back on track, rhather than cancel Tuhoronuku's mandate and start from scratch.
Friday’s meeting ended with the resignation of four trustees, including former acting chair Sam Napia and acting deputy chair Moana Tuwhare, who had tried to win control of the next stage of the process.
They accused Tuhoronuku of having no intention of putting hapu in the driving seat, as Maranga Mai recommended.
But Mr Sadler says Tuhornuku took heart last week’s assurance from the Minister that the crown wants only one Ngapuhi settlement rather than six or seven hapu deals.
"I think the Minister in his wisdom has allowed us wriggle room. I'm hoping what we've given him is enough to satisfy him that we will be implemeting the Maranga Mai Report," he says.
Hone Sadler says the resignation of trustees from Waimate and Hokianga should not affect proceedings, because hapu endure, while personalities come and go.
