Kohanga benefit not just for kids
Maori Party MP and former kohanga reo mum Marama Fox says the organisation has transformed the lives of generations of Maori women.
The Kohanga Reo National Trust is holding a staff hui this week to familiarise them with changes in the organisation and discuss what can be done to increase participation and contribute to Maori development.
Ms Fox says kohanga reo was responsible not just for restoring te reo Maori to the lips of mokopuna but for opening the minds of Maori women, who back in the 1980s were at the bottom of all social and education indicators.
"We are now engaged at every level of Maori corporate society and in the wider public society and in the political realm, including myself, because it is a political movement, a political statement, but it has done so much for our people," she says.
