Te Kuiti police are looking into a complaint by the Maniapoto Maori Trust Board about the removal of ancestral portraits from its board room.
Board trustee and former chair Rongo Wetere told Radio New Zealand he reclaimed the paintings, which are of Pei Te Hurinui Jones, Rangimarie Hetet and Henare Tuwhangai.
The board says while Mr Wetere commissioned the paintings from artist John Willets in 1989, the board paid for them and owns them.
