Panel to bring Maori perspective to science

The chair of the Kahui Maori panel for the National Science Challenge for Technological Innovation says the panel will try to help scientists get a Maori perspective on their work.
Te Taka Keegan says New Zealand is full of talented scientists, and the challenge is about giving them more support to make the kind of breakthroughs that will improve people’s lives.
His own field of computer science shows the value of bringing different perspectives to bear, such as the way an influx of women affected interface design.
"You get a different way of looking at things and ultimately the interfaces that are built are more accessible, more available, more usable to the general population, so that’s what has been happening in computer science, we’ve been bringing more women in to enhance our products, and we want to do a similar thing, bringing more Maori, more Maori knowledge, Maori perspectives into the general sciences," Dr Keegan says.
