Latimer extended national psyche

Perseverance, tenacity and the courage to keep going in the face of opposition.
Those are the sorts of lessons that far north leader Haami Piripi draws from the life of Sir Graham Latimer, the leading chief of his region.
Speaking at Sir Graham’s tangi in Pamapuria, the Te Rarawa chair said he has left a huge legacy. Particularly in the way he redefined what the treaty settlement process could deliver.
"He took the boundaries way beyond where any government thought they were going to be and he pushed it to the absolute limit of acceptibility in terms of the national psyche. He took not only the politicians but the country to a new level of understanding," Mr Piripi says.
Even though Sir Graham never won election to parliament, he was a far more effective politician than most of those who served there.
The tangi continues tomorrow with the funeral service tomorrow morning.
