Housing crisis creates Budget expectation

Greens co-leader Metiria Turei is picking spin over substance from today's Budget.
She says Minister Paula Bennett has signalled extra for social housing but it won't be enough to tacke the size of the problem.
Stories of people living in cars of racking up huge debts to Work and Income for emergency accommodation in motels are putting the pressure on National.
"It's a complete disaster because this Government doesn't care about how those families are doing, it just wants them out of sight. We will see if this Budget provides anything real for them, I don't expect it will. The Government will try to spin it and say they are doing a great job. Most people believe they are doing a terrible job and unless it's a very big provision in the Budget, nobody is going to believe their spin," Ms Turei says.
The Greens' prescription is for a $200 million a year state house building programme, funded out of the money Housing New Zealand now pays to the government in dividends and tax.
