Debt trap sparks petition

Maori Party co-leader Marama Fox has received a petition urging the Government to wipe debt incurred by people put into emergency accommodation.
Families are racking up debts of thousands of dollars to Work and Income because they are sent to motels when no state houses or other rental accommodation is available.
Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett has signalled the policy of recovering WINZ debt will change in September, but Mrs Fox says it needs to be scrapped now.
She says it highlights the lack of low-cost housing available for vulnerable families.
The petition presented to Mrs Fox at Parliament yesterday was initiated by the community campaigning group Action Station, which collected more than 9500 signatures online in a few days.
