Good results from Rotorua education trial
Rotorua Mayor Steve Chadwick says her council wants to continue working with Ngati Whakaue and the wider Rotorua community to boost education results in the region.
As part of the government's social sector trials aimed at working out new ways to fund and deliver programmes, Te Taumata o Ngati Whakaue Iho Ake Trust led a Rotorua project aimed at keeping children engaged in education.
The government has now abandoned trials in Whakatane, Rotorua, Waikato, South Taranaki, and Wairarapa that did not work, and will hand the others over to host communities.
Ms Chadwick says the Rotorua trial led to principals and the wider education sector collaborating to achieve common goals, and an improvement in principals’ leadership skills, and increased acceptance of the concept of school clusters.
It also resulted in Nga Pumanawa e Waru, a district-wide e-learning initiative, supported by Next Foundation with 18 early adopter schools involved in its first year.
