Stonefields battle moves to gallery
The battle to save the Mangere's volcanic stonefields has taken on an artistic edge, with a show opening tomorrow at the St Paul St Gallery One at the Auckland University of Technology.
Te Ihu o Mataoho was created by Rebecca Ann Hobbs, a visual arts lecturer at MIT Otara, in consultation with mana whenua and collaborating with other creative practitioners and members of Ihumatao-based action group SOUL. Save Our Unique Landscape.
The 10 works range from moving image to photographs to hand painted silk banners and textiles.
She says her aim was to perform multimedia art works with locally specific contexts.
She says volcanic sites are precious to the communities around them, and that's a cause for celebration.
The Ihumatao area of Mangere contains protected archaeological sites, but open land next to those sites with significant cultural and geological features is now threatened by a massive housing development.
