Watercare says Mangere land too smelly for SHA
Watercare says a 33 hectare block at Mangere can’t be used for a special housing area because it’s an odour buffer for the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant.
Opponents of the Fletcher Residential’s planned 480 house development beside the Otuataua Stonefields have identified the land as an alternative site.
But Watercare chief executive Raveen Jaduram says the company has told the Save Our Unique Landscapes group the land is subject to the plant’s own resource consents, which require that no noxious, objectionable or offensive odours reach the neighbouring community.
He says as the plant expands to meet growth, and treatment processes will move a lot closer to the southern odour buffer boundary along Ascot Road.
