Pacific and Maori artists share culture

Works produced at a Waikato University art hui go on show today at Hamilton’s Creative Waikato Gallery.
Te Kura Toi Tangata Faculty of Education lecturer Donn Ratana says Putahi brings together work produced by local Maori and international Pacifica artists from Hawaii, Papua New Guinea, New Caledonia, Tahiti and Tonga.
He says connecting with talented artists from across the Pacific allows for skills, knowledge, and culture to be shared.
“The exhibition is focused on new ways of finding form in contemporary Maori Pacifica art. This can be seen through artists’ painting, printmaking, photography, jewellery, ta moko, mixed media and uku (clay),” Mr Ratana says.
The exhibition is open from 11am to 2pm weekdays until 14 January.
