Pa Boys strikes chord with indigenous Latin America
The Pa Boys has won the best fiction award at a festival of indigenous film held in Chile and Argentina.
The film writer/director Himiona Grace was subtitled for the festival in Spanish by Kathryn Lehman from Auckland University’s school of Spanish and Latin American studies.
Dr Lehman says it was a privilege to observe how ancestral knowledge can be transmitted in such a cool way, not only across generations, but also across languages and cultures
The film follows a Maori reggae band as a tour of East Coast and Northland pubs turns into a road trip to their roots for the band members.
The Festival Internacional de Cine y Video de los Pueblos IndÃgenas has been held in different location around Latin America over the past 30 years, and it’s entirely managed and curated by Indigenous Peoples.
