Yellow Brick Road to Aotearoa Fisheries board
Te Ohu Kaimoana has gone for experience and entrepreneurship in its selection of new directors for Aotearoa Fisheries Ltd.
The experience comes from Craig Ellison, who chaired its predecessor, Moana Pacific Fisheries, and helped set up the largest Maori-owned fishing company while serving on the former Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission.
He started his career with Otakou Fisheries in Dunedin in the early 1980s and is also the executive chair of Ngai Tahu Seafood Limited and chair of the New Zealand Seafood Standards Council.
The entrepreneur is Rachel Taulelei, the founder of Wellington-based seafood supplier who was recently appointed the chief executive of Wakatu Incorporation-owned food and beverage company Kono NZ.
AFL chair Whaimutu Dewes says they are both well-known in the New Zealand fishing industry and have proven experience in a variety of seafood and primary industry businesses.
They replace Fred Cookson and Wayne Peters.
It may be the last time Te Ohu Kaimoana chooses the AFL board members, with iwi moving to have more direct oversight under restructuring now going on.
