Taupo Beef stars in sustainability awards


A business involving several Ngati Tuwharetoa farm around Lake Taupo has won the supreme prize at this year’s Sustainable Business Network Awards.
Taupo Beef was started by after the number of cows farmers could raise was capped by moves to reduce the amount of nitrogen going into the lake.
Mike Barton established customers will pay more for beef if they know it was raised using sustainable methods, and the firm now sells meat from his own Glen Emmreth Farm and from several neighbouring Tuwharetoa land trusts.
He says the biggest impact we have on the planet it through the production of the food we eat, and chnges are needed inboth farming methods and consumer behaviour.
Ngati Whatua Orakei’s Whai Maia Trust was commended for what it’s doing to replant the Whenua Rangatira at Takaparawha-Bastion Point, and to restore the health of the Okahu catchment.
