Wanganui Council gets H treatment

It’s official. Whanganui has got back its H.
Local Government Minister Louise Upston says the formal change in spelling for the local authority name, done by the Governor-General through an Order in Council, reflects the views of the views of the Wanganui District Council, local iwi and public submitters.
It was also the recommendation of the New Zealand Geographic Board Nga Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa.
The river and town have already been renamed.
Ms Upston says Wanganui has no meaning in te reo Maori, while Whanganui with an H has a number of traditions in Maori oral history.
