Power trust asset battle looms

A former Auckland Central MP standing for the Auckland Electricity Consumer Trust wants to see Maori become more involved in decisions affecting the region’s infrastructure.
Judith Tizard is on the City Vision ticket, along with candidates from the Greens, Greypower and Generation Zero.
They’re against a push to hand the trust’s assets, including shares in lines company Vector, to the Auckland Council.
Ms Tizard says participation is traditionally low in the election, but there are major issues at stake.
"I’m really impressed with the way that the Auckland Council has been forced to confront Maori on issues of infrastructure and land use across Auckland and the way Maori have stepped up but it’s got to be taken to the next step where people get a say about the ordinary way their lives are managed, the things that are done to us, not just the things we are able to do," she says.
Postal ballots will be sent out later this month to people who receive power bills in the old Auckland Electric Power Board region.
