Parihaka Day call for action

Parihaka’s power to guide and inspire generations of activists will be on display tomorrow at Auckland Central Library tomorrow.
Hosted by the Pacific Panthers and Auckland Peace Action, the Parihaka Day event features a range of speakers including filmmaker Paora Joseph; academics Keala Kelly, Craig Santos-Perez, Teresia Teaiwa and Jane Kelsey; Muslim feminist Khayreyah Amani Wahaab; prison abolitionist Emilie Rakete; as well as Green MP Marama Davidson talking about the Women's Boat to Gaza.
One of the organisers, Sina Brown-Davis, says the non-violent resistance to military force at Parihaka led by Te Whiti o Rongomai and Tohu Kakahi showed Maori ways to survive colonialism and move forward.
"I think it’s also important for us to know today that a just and peaceful society can only be built on meaningful recognition of Maori as tangata whenua, that there must also be more than token gestures of money and apologies for gross wrong doing. We must also look at the return of stolen lands, resources, and the restoration of Maori rights to exercise tino rangtiratanga," she says.
The Peace Action conference is at the Auckland Library whare wananga from 10 to 3.30pm, followed by a screening of Paora Joseph’s Tatarakihi: The Children of Parihaka at the Academy Cinema at 5pm.
