Gloves on as Aotearoa tackles waste
Pan-Maori fishing company Aotearoa Fisheries is taking a closer look at what it's wasting.
Corporate affairs manager Allyn Glaysher was aomg those who put on protective gear and got his hands dirty helping Global Action Plan Oceania sort the waste from its Lorne Street Wellington processing and packing site.
He says other sites will undergo similar audits with specific waste management strategies developed for each of them.
The company wants an overall waste management and minimisation plan that puts waste where is will have the least impact on the environment.
Mr Glaysher says if the company is to become a global leader in sustainable fisheries management and development, it also means changing the way it operates at home base.
Cardboard and clean plastic film were the two largest categories of waste at Lorne St, leading the company to introduce large mixed recycling bins in the office instead of under desk bins, and recycling cages outside to reduce the material going into the general waste bin.
A similar audit at the Auckland processing plant eight months ago increased the amount being recycled by almost 50 percent.
