Tuturuatu short wins Tokyo acclaim
A five minute animated film about the endangered Tuturuatu or Dotterel has won Christchurch 12-year-old Tomairangi Harvey the best young film maker award at the Japan Wildlife Film Festival in Tokyo.
Te Ao o te Tuturuatu was made for the 2014 Outlook for Someday Zealand’s sustainability film challenge for young people, winning the Whakatipuranga Award in 2014 for a film with a Maori indigenous perspective.
Tomairangi, who is of Moriori, Ngati Mutunga, Tuhoe and Ngai Tahu descent, wrote, directed and animated the film.
She says narrating the film in te reo Maori was a way for her to show people through her own eyes.
Judges said the sympathy, deep feeling and love she feels for the shore Dotterel overflows from her animated film.
