Fresh chance to stop Ihumatao development
A group trying to stop development of ancient occupation sites around Ihumatao Pa wants to get as many people as possible from the Mangere community in to a special Auckland City Council meeting on the site's zoning.
Qiane Matata-Sipu from Save Our Unique Landscape says a request by seven Auckland councillors for a review of the special housing area designation is a major step forward.
She says busses have been booked to get people from south Auckland to the August 27 session, where SOUL also hopes to present a petition against the project.
This is like our hikoi. We are all going to go there and make it very well known that this SHA is not welcome in our community. Their decisions are affecting real people, real whanau, real members of their community. What they tick on their piece of paper is having a lot of affect on actual families and so we want to be able to go and show them that" she says.
Qiane Matata-Sipu says Fletcher Residential's option to buy the land depends on it getting resource consents, so changing the special housing area designation is key to stopping the project.
