Robust process for flag
A Maori member of the flag consideration panel Malcolm Mulholland says they are really pleased with the 40 designs they have chosen for further consideration from more than 10,000 submitted.
Malcolm Mulholland says it hasn't been an easy process but hopefully New Zealanders can see themselves reflected in the designs in front of them with an emotional attachment.
"These designs if they do become New Zealand flag they are there to evoke a sense of patriotism. If they fail that test then there is not much hope of them becoming thenew New Zealand flag. It just gives you a little bit of the insight into the process that we went through. We are really rapt with the 40 we came up with" he says.
Malcolm Mulholland says letting the people decide on their flag is an international first with the current 40 flags to be narrowed down to 4 which will then be put to the people in a referedum to choose a winner.
A further vote in March next year will decide whether we want a new flag or to continue with the existing one.
