EPA accountability
Ikaroa Rawhiti MP Meka Whaitiri says she was pleased to receive both Maori Party and United Future support for the first reading of an amendment to the Environmental Protection Authority Act.
She says there was an ommission when the act was first drafted, that doesn't include the role of protecting, maintaining and advancing the environment.
Ms Whaitiri says the agency will be more accountable to the environment with the clause added.
She says the government has an economic agenda based on extractive industries and didn't support the proposed change, but she's comfortable now it is headed to the select committee stage where Maori concerns can be tabled.
