Digital dominance the new colonialism

A Maori digital leader says Maori need to develop a response to data colonisation.
Karaitiana Taiuru, a former president of the Maori Internet Society, says data and information is being digitised by libraries, government agencies and corporates with no consideration of Maori concerns.
"That might be whakapapa or it might be a photo done of our tupuna or a video that's just been digitised and put on the internet and all ownership is taken away from our people. We've also got statistical information about our people that has been digitised and we have no control over that," he says.
Karaitiana Taiuru says a group has been formed out of this week’s Nethui in Auckland to take the discussion further on a tikanga for the internet.
