Modern Maori Quartet to sparkle in Samarkand

The Maori showbands of the past carved out a niche in the steamy nightclubs of South East Asia.
The Modern Maori Quartet is set to go further, securing a gig at the 10th Sharq Taronalari World Music Festival in Samarkand, Uzbekistan in August.
Founding member Maaka Pohatu says that might make the suave crooners the first Maori showband to perform in central Asia.
On the way they will also perform at nightclubs in Singapore and Malaysia.
They’ve launched a crown funding campaign on the Boosted site to help cover some of the costs of the trip.
The quartet is at the Hannah Playhouse in Wellington this week as part of the Ahi Kaa Festival for Matariki.
It will make its first overseas performance next month at the Sydney Matariki Charity Ball on July 10.
