Some of the earliest New Zealanders to make the big OE have their stories documented in a new book.
Haerenga: Early Maori Journeys Across the Globe tells the stories of early Maori voyagers who, from the eighteenth century on, left New Zealand to travel overseas in search of adventure, commercial opportunities and political recognition.
Author Vincent O’Malley says once European ships started calling in the decades after 1769, Maori showed an almost insatiable appetite to travel, explore and discover the rest of the world.
He says the first New Zealander to sight Antarctica was a Maori sailor, Tuaiti, in 1840.
Haerenga is part of the Bridget Williams Books’ Texts series of short books.
