Charter school buys waka

Pupils at Whangarei’s Te Kapehu Whetu charter school will get lessons from a master when they take deliver of their new waka-tete.
The school’s sponsor, He Puna Marama Trust, bought the canoe for $100,000 from Te Taitokerau Tarai Waka, which is raising funds to complete a traditional navigation wananga at Aurere in Doubtless Bay.
Waka builder Hekenukumai Busby says he’s pleased it has gone to the school, and he will give the students lessons in celestial navigation and waka lore.
The waka will be handed over tomorrow.
Principal Nathan Matthews says the school sees the waka as part of its hauora programme, and it is also a practical way to teach matauranga Maori or traditional knowledge.
