Government must provide stable housing

The State Housing Action Network has launched a petition calling for an end to the government’s housing sell-off and a return to a major state house building programme.
Coordinator John Minto says for many families the crisis is not being able to find an affordable home to rent, let alone to buy.
He says nowhere in the world has the market been able to provide quality affordable homes for families on low incomes.
The best it can provide is the equivalent of a cardboard shack on the side of the road.
"All round the world you've got shack communities that have been established because that's all the market can provide for them. New Zealand's bigger than that we've got a history that shows that we can proviide good housing for everyone and we know that that has enormous positives for young children growing up, for their health, their education for their social stablility and we're removing all of that by not insisting that the government provide stable housing for these kids" he says.
John Minto says the State Housing Action Network is considering a mobilisation on parliament later this year when it delivers the petition.
