Tau stands tough on Tuhoronuku

Ngapuhi Runanga chair Sonny Tau says most tribal members want a unified settlement to their claims.
The claim negotiation body Tuhoronuku, which Mr Tau also chairs, is about to appoint three negotiators to start the task of putting together a casebook of each hapu’s claims and wish lists.
It’s not waiting for the Waitangi Tribunal to finish its report on whether it should have been given the mandate to negotiate.
Mr Tau says people have had enough of efforts by a group of leaders within the large Ngati Hine hapu to get a separate settlement.
" There is going to be a commercial settlement for the whole of Ngapuhi theres no two ways about that and even they say that. And when we question Ngapuhi with a survey that is the first thing is that we stick together. Now the second thing is the hapu by hapu negotiations will be done for the settlement of our cultural redress " he says.
Sonny Tau says there is a seat set aside on Tuhoronuku for Ngati Hine, and the hapu has also been offered the chance to appoint a negotiator.
