TV uploads critical haka

A public outcry and a staff revolt has forced Maori Television to upload a haka critical of the channel to its online coverage of Te Matatini 2015.
The haka by Waikato group Te Iti Kahurangi expressed anger at the reporting by current affairs show Native Affairs of financial misdealing at a Kohanga Reo National Trust subsidiary.
It was excluded from the original upload at the direction of senior managers.
Chief executive Paora Maxwell says it was discussed at a staff hui yesterday and a collective decision was made to publish.
Waikato-Tainui executive chair Rahui Papa says it was the right thing to do.
He says speaking openly is an integral part of Maori custom and the kapa haka stage is an acknowledged cultural forum for the expression of views and opinions on issues that affect all Maori.
