Inzone to open girls hostel
The Inzone Education Foundation, which runs a hostel allowing Maori and Pasifika boys to attend Auckland Grammar, is opening a similar home for girls.
Te Kainga Huarahi opens on Thursday just metres from the entrance to Epsom Girls Grammar, and will be the home for 16 girls from around the North Island.
Foundation managing director Terrance Wallace says volunteers have spent hundreds of hours renovating the heritage building inside and out, including a group of 14 senior students from Redfield College near Sydney who flew to Auckland last week to assist with the preparations after reading about the project online.
He says there is huge demand for places in the hostels from Maori and Pasifika students wanting to gain a top class education.
Under the Inzone model, Mr Wallace will be the shared guardian of the 71 rangatahi in the hostels, thus meeting the schools’ strict zoning requirements.
