Ngapuhi in line for Roger award
The Ngapuhi Runanga’s attempts to extend the time, holders of treaty settlement quota could use foreign charter vessels, has earned it a nomination for a Roger Award.
Murray Horton from the Campaign Against Foreign Control of Aotearoa says the Northland runanga is one of the four finalists in the Accomplice Award for aiding and abetting bad behaviour by transnational corporations.
The anonymous nominator said Te Runanga A Iwi O Ngapuhi was complicit in the use of third world workers in conditions akin to slavery on the ships used to catch its quota.
They said that has given New Zealand a reputation as a country that profits from slavery.
The six finalists for the Roger Award for the Worst Transnational Corporation Operating in Aotearoa/New Zealand are ANZ bank for exploitation of workers and profiteering; past Roger winner British American Tobacco NZ; Coca Cola Amatil; IAG/State Insurance for its treatment of policyholders affected by the Christchurch earthquakes, PGG Wrightson for promoting a herbicide and high tolerance swede combo linked to the death of cows, and Bluff aluminum smelter operator Rio Tinto.
