Maori lead way in policing
The Police national ethnic advisor at says innovations in Maori policing are now being applied to other communities.
Inspector Rakesh Naidoo, who is part to the Maori, Pasifika and Ethnic Services team at Police headquarters in Wellington, says iwi liaison officers led to the formation of similar roles for Pacific and other ethnic groups.
" As we are looking at alternative resolutions to deal with Maori offending and victimisation, the same, we are trying to apply the same learnings across our ethnic and pacific as well. It's not so much about reinventing the wheel, but really the lessons learnt, and ensuring that we do not make the same mistakes and also building on the success that we have had " he says.
