Award to Whanganui iwi business
A recycling joint venture between iwi group Te Runanga o Tupoho and the Whanganui District Council has won the Community Innovation section of this year’s Sustainable Business Network Awards.
Judges said the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre was getting some incredible reuse and conversion statistics.
As well as recycling a wide range of waste, it was providing education and community facilities at its base in the former town prison.
Manager Ramari Te Uamairangi says the iwi saw it as an opportunity to be involved in a progressive business that benefits not just its own people but the people of Whanganui, while looking after papatuanuku.
