War and Peace on Kingitanga Day agenda
New Zealander of the year Dr Lance O’Sullivan has been chosen to headline next week's Kingitanga Day at Waikato University.
The day, on September 18, is a way of marking and celebrating the strong relationship the University of Waikato has with the Kingitanga, Waikato-Tainui and many other iwi across the country.
Dr O'Sullivan will speak on advancing Maori health from the flax roots, drawing on his work creating school clinics and other initiatives in the far north.
Rahui Papa, Robert Joseph and Antoine Coffin will speak on Nga Pakanga Whenua – The Flashpoints of War, offering historic and contemporary Maori insights into the battles of Rangiriri, Orakau, Pukehinahina and Te Ranga 150 years ago.
Maui Hudson and Dr Kevin Collier will discuss use of matauranga and science for managing mahinga kai, especially with the emergence of collaborative governance models in post-settlement situations.
The story of the Kingitanga through song will be told by Reo Graham, George and Tangiwai Ria, and Te Whanau o Waihirere, and there will be a screening of The Pa Boys followed by a talk from producer Mina Mathieson.
