Ngapuhi seeking claim negotiators
Ngapuhi treaty settlement body Tuhoronuku is advertising for negotiators to sit across the table from the crown.
The crown recognised Tuhoronuku's mandate in February after demanding major changes to the organisation, including requiring it to expand hapu representation and hold fresh elections.
It also insisted that the 22 Tuhoronuku members, with the exception of the chairperson, could not be negotiators.
The chairperson, Raniera Tau, says the negotiators need to have a solid grasp of Ngapuhi history and culture, a proven leadership track record, knowledge of the Treaty sector and an ability to work with a range of stakeholders.
He says the job will probably take up at least three days a week for three or four years.
The ads have upset hapu who have a claim before the Waitangi Tribunal opposing Tuhoronuku's mandate, but Mr Tau says he's not waiting for the tribunal.
"There's always been a lot of korero and a lot of wind out there but this is the time to put one's hand up if one wants to be carrying Ngapuhi forward in terms of the settlement of its treaty claim," Mr Tau says.
The negotiators will be backed by advisors brought in for specific skills, such as the way Ngai Tuhoe used a retired high court judge to help with its claim.
The closing date for applications is September 26.
