Ngapuhi maverick David Rankin has been told he should have taken his challenge to the kingitanga to next month’s Koroneihana hui, rather than fire out a press release.
Mr Rankin, who describes himself as an iwi leader, says he is planning a hui in Ngapuhi territory later in ther year at which all iwi will be able to discuss the future of the King movement.
He compared the kingitanga to a badly injured horse that needs to be put out of its misery.
Prominent kingitanga supporter Mamae Takerei says the annual Koroneihana is a place where all iwi can come to express their views, and that’s where Mr Rankin should have come.
