Tataiako step too far for National
Mana leader Hone Harawira says Education Minister Hekia Parata isn’t doing enough to tackle racism in the school system.
Ms Parata this week expressed disappointment at a study by education researcher Hana Turner that found maths teachers at five Auckland secondary schools had low expectations of their Maori students.
She said it was a very small sample that doesn’t reflect what most teachers think.
She also ruled out making all schools use the Tataiako cultural competency tool developed by associate minister Pita Sharples, but it would be used by the 100 schools in the Building on Success pilot programme.
Mr Harawira says the Maori Party’s effort in creating Tataiako was wasted.
"National’s focus is not on people, generally, and it is certainly not on raising the sights of Maori. There is nothing across the sectors. Welfare, health, education, justice, and employment, we've gone backwards in the last six years. Being at the table hasn't changed anything, particularly in terms of education," he says.
