Council sees Maori face of homelessness
Wellington City Council has endorsed a homelessness strategy that incorporates a Maori perspective.
Dr Shiloh Groot, the tangata whenua co-chair of the New Zealand Coalition to End Homelessness, says the Maori perspective fits in with international best practice.
Te Mahana Homelessness Strategy acknowledges that reconnecting Maori to their cultural roots is a long term solution to not only stopping homelessness from occurring in the first place but also stops it from happening again.
Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says it’s every person’s right to be housed and she expects greater achievement through collaboration by agencies throughout the city.
Homeless people are citizens who required the same attention as all the city’s other citizens.
