Council falls short on land based dumping
Shannon hapu, Ngati Whakatere, has come out against a plan by Horowhenua District Council to discharge some of the town’s wastewater into the Manawatu River within sight of its marae.
The council bought an 85 hectare farm beside its wastewater plant last year for land-based discharge.
But in its resource consent application it says it still wants to pipe more than 20 percent of the water into the river.
The hapu says that’s culturally, spiritually and physically and offensive, and only full discharge to land is acceptable.
It says consultation with the council has been non-existent.
