Pikari wins strokeplay but clawed by eagle

Back to back rounds of 68 gave Te Awamutu’s Compton Pikari the strokeplay title at the 77th Maori Golf strokeplay championship in Te Puke.
The New Zealand representative’s eight under total put him well ahead of Jordan Rangihika of Kawerau on even par, and Sam Howe (Opotiki) and defending champion Jordan Golding (Omanu) at two-over.
Past winners of the event have included Michael Campbell and Philip Tataurangi.
In the matchplay, Pikari finished runner-up to Gisborne’s William Brown, whose chip in for eagle from 50 metres out on the eighth hole gave him the momentum to win.
